Certificate Program in “Algorithmic Thinking with Python” (Hybrid Mode)

ICFOSS is pleased to announce a Certificate Program in “Algorithmic Thinking with Python” (Hybrid Mode), from 2nd November 2024 to 30th November 2024.

The program is thoughtfully designed with a strong focus on all degree curriculum, ensuring that students with even basic computer knowledge can easily engage and participate. This inclusive approach allows all learners to thrive and develop their skills in a supportive environment. This program consists of 30 hours of offline instruction and 20 hours of online learning, for a total of 50 hours.

Objectives:

This Certificate Program is designed to significantly enhance participants algorithmic thinking and Python programming skills. The course emphasizes the use of open-source tools to foster creativity and effective problem-solving strategies, guided by experienced professionals from ICFOSS.

Duration:

30 hours of offline instruction: Only on Saturdays, 6 hours per day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (total of 5 days) at ICFOSS, Swatantra, Green Field, Kariavattom, Thiruvananthapuram.

20 hours of online learning: During weekdays from 6 PM to 8 PM, bringing the total to 50 hours.

Week 1	Introduction to Problem-Solving Strategies: Heuristics, Means-Ends Analysis, Backtracking (2 hours) Problem-Solving Process: Formulating a model, developing an algorithm, testing and evaluating solutions (2 hours). Python Programming Essentials: Variables, data types, math module, Python Standard Library for basic I/O (2 hours).	Day 1: Python operators, precedence, and control structures introduction (2 hours). Day 2: Introduction to pseudocode and flowcharts (2 hours). Day 3: Selection and iteration in Python (if-else, for, while loops) (2 hours).
Week 2	Algorithms and Pseudocode Representation: Sequencing, selection, and loops (2 hours) Flowcharts: Visualizing control flow (2 hours) Sample Problems: Expression evaluation, determining larger/smaller numbers, grade calculation (2 hours).	Day 1: Sequence data types in Python (list, tuple, set, strings, dictionaries) (2 hours). Day 2: More on functions, recursion: Fibonacci, factorial, sum of digits (2 hours). Day 3: Problem decomposition using merge sort as an example (2 hours).
Week 3	Arrays in Python: Using NumPy for array operations (2 hours). Decomposition and Modularization: Defining and using functions in Python (2 hours). Recursion: Concepts, call stack, and avoiding circularity (2 hours).	Day 1: Computational Approaches: Brute-force, divide-and-conquer, dynamic programming (2 hours).
Week 4	Greedy Algorithms: Examples and comparison with dynamic programming (2 hours). Randomized Approaches: Coupon collection and hat-check problems (2 hours). Sample problems on brute-force and divide-and-conquer approaches (2 hours)	Day 1: Problem-solving using greedy and dynamic programming (2 hours). Day 2: Advanced Python functions and modules (2 hours). Day 3 : Q&A session (2 hours).
Week 5	Lab Sessions: Recursion exercises: Fibonacci, factorial, GCD, and sum of digits (3 hours). Lab Sessions: Array manipulation, string operations, and simple desktop calculator in Python (3 hours).

Assignments, Examination and project presentation

Target Audience:

UG/PG students and Faculty members
The number of participants for the proposed program is limited to 30 nos per batch.

Certification Criteria: Certification will be issued to participants who qualifies with:

90% of attendance
50% marks in Examination
50% marks in Assignments
50% marks on Project

Prerequisites: Basic computer knowledge
